It started with a vision and singular thought of how we should deal with fast fashion products. These Primark pyjama trousers had been on Vinted for around 6 months and were not selling for even £1. The value had been lost.

I decided to explore how we can still get worth from something so invaluable now to us.

Starting with the basic shell of the garment, visually deciding what could possible be made from this fast fashion piece? First thought was a bag, but after drafting some small clothing patterns I opted for some shorts and accessories. However it then dawned on me to set a challenge to create as many items of children's clothing in different sizes with no waste left.

It included a lot of forward thinking and strategic pattern cutting.

At the end of the process there was not a single scrap piece of material left, every time a piece was created the off-cuts were added to the practical coasters.

The final products below include; 3- 6 month old top, 6-9 month old romper, 9 months- 1 year old skirt and shorts, a scrunchie, a pair of coasters and a pair of socks. They had a chance at being owned again with no association to fast fashion.

The workshop took a step towards transforming everyday wardrobes, to creating something beyond the end of life. An arranged meeting at the customer’s house last weekend, offered parents a practical and inspiring way to repurpose end-of-life adult garments by transforming them into custom-made clothing for children.

The session was small, offering every participant one-on-one guidance and the chance to get some hands-on experience gathering ideas of their own for how they want it to look for their child. A mother of two boys had a dress she no longer wore and had a hole in, but her boy really loved that pattern of the fabric. So, we decided to create it into a t-shirt for her oldest boy, but her youngest boy also wanted to wear it later in the session which showed the versatility although a tad bigger!

With guidance, the parents learnt how to deconstruct the adult-sized clothing strategically, getting the most out of the material. This also left space for being creative and thinking of different possibilities whilst working with what they had.

The mums found that the hardest part of this workshop would be getting the time to sit down and make something. It was the lack of time they believe would have the most impact on people starting this sooner. Overall, it was great fun, and they both had an outcome at the end of the session to take home.
